It's hard to make the decision whether or not to rush without knowing much about sorority life itself. It can be equally difficult to go into recruitment and pledging without knowing exactly what to expect from your new found sorority. In today's society, it's almost impossible to get an accurate picture of sorority life from outside the Greek system. You certainly can't get that picture from pop culture and the TV movie-of-the-week. The only way to understand the friendship, growth, and sisterhood that can be found as a sorority member is to talk with people who have experienced what their sorority has to offer - and that is largely what recruitment is all about. During rush, feel free to ask the sisters you meet about these different aspects of sorority life - scholarship, leadership, friendship, philanthropy, and social - as you try to decide whether Greek life is right for you.
Philanthropy
Sororities have a strong tradition of supporting both their local (designated by the chapter) and national (designated by the sorority's national organization) philanthropies. Sororities offer many opportunities for hands-on community service. Sororities are well-organized and successful in their efforts to aid the campus and community, and philanthropic work is often cited as the most satisfying reward of Greek life.
Scholarship
Although Greek life is full of fun and opportunities, it is important to remember that education is the reason that we are at TWU. TUW's sororities stress academics as part of a well-rounded college education. Each sorority has an elected academic chair who works with chapter members to help them maintain a high level of academic excellence, and individual chapters often recognize sisters who have made a great grade point average or received academic honors.
Each sorority sets a different standard for it's minimum GPA required to pledge and to initiate (the two are often the same). This information can be found on each chapter's individual web page.
Social
Mixers, formals, socials, and more! Sorority social life provides endless opportunities to meet people and hang out with sisters in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Sororities plan activities such as ice or roller skating mixers, theme mixers, campouts, formals, crush parties, and grab-a-dates. From date functions to sisterhood activities, sorority social life offers an exciting outlet from the hectic demands of college life.
Leadership
Sororities encourage their members to become active in the college community and in their chapter. In fact, some of the most prominent student leadership positions at TWU are held by sorority women! Joining a sorority is an excellent opportunity to enhance and polish your leadership skills. When you become a sister, you will find opportunities for leadership in both the chapter and on the Panhellenic Council, and these leadership positions can often lead to other such positions in other campus organizations. Working in these leadership roles will help you develop valuable skills such as effective communication, preparing (and sticking to!) a budget, and delegating responsibility. The leadership knowledge that you gain through sorority experience will prove invaluable and rewarding during your college career and beyond.
Friendship
Sororities are a wonderful source of friendship. Each sorority has special traditions that have been passed down for generations, and being a part of that history creates a bond among sorority sisters that is different from any other kind of friendship. Your sisters are a circle of women from many different backgrounds who will grow with you throughout your days in college. In addition, membership is a lifetime experience, and even after your college days are over, you will find sisters in cities throughout the United States and even the world!
