Active/ Inactive Member - An initiated sorority member who is affiliated with an active college chapter.
Alumni/Alumnae - Sorority members who are no longer in college.
Bid - An invitation to become a member of a sorority.
Chapter - A group of sorority members on a college campus.
De-Pledge - To lose a place in a sorority by the individual's choice. A woman who breaks her pledge may not join another sorority for a full calender year.
Greek - Social sororities which are members of the Panhellenic council.
Initiation - The formal ceremony by which new members become actve members and receive full membership privileges.
Intentional Single Preference - Formerly known as suicide. When a potential member only lists one sorority on her preference card. This does not garantee that the woman will receive a bid, and is discouraged by the two sororities and Panhellenic council.
Legacy - A daughter, sister, or granddaughter of a member of a sorority.
Mixer - A social activity planned by the sorority usually with another chapter.
Open Recruitment - The time following Formal Recruitment when sororities may take additional new members if they have not reached their total (40 people).
Panhellenic - The organization consisting of two representatives from each sorority that determines and enforces rules for recruitment, and general sorority business. It also conducts fall Recruitment.
New Member - A person who has accepted a bid from a sorority. The new member status lasts until initiation.
Membership Recruitment Acceptance - A card on which a potential member indicates her preference in regard to which sororities she wishes to join. A woman is obligated to accept a bid from any groip she lists on her membership recruitment acceptance card.
Quota - the maximum number of people each sorority is allowed to take during Fall Recruitment.
Potential Member - An individual who is registered for and participating in sorority recruitment.
Silence - A period of silence, from the time the potential members register for Fall Recruitment to the time bids are extended. During this time, sorority members and alumni shall not contact potential members except at recruitment parties. Conversation outside of recruitment parites is limited to a friendly "hello" except for Panhellenic members.
