Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to have to go through Formal Recruitment?

To go through Formal Recruitment at Texas Wesleyan, all you need is $10 dollars for the registration fee, and two pictures of yourself.  Everything else that you will need will be provided to you.

What are references, and how many do I need?

Although at many schools with a larger greek system require one or several reference letters, TWU Panhellenic requires only that you fill out the registration form given to you at the first Recruitment meeting.

If I go through Recruitment, am I obligated to join?

There are many people who use Recruitment as an opportunity to find out more about the Greek system and help them decide whether they want to pledge. Although the common perception of Recruitment is as a means to finding and joining a sorority, it is also a way to meet new people and make new friends. Recruitment is an opportunity for you to meet the sororities, get a glimpse of Greek life, and decide whether or not you would like to be a part of the TWU Greek system. Once you have signed a preference card following the final party, you have obligated yourself to the sororities listed on your card should one of them offer you a bid. This means only that if you reject a bid from a sorority listed on your preference card, you are unable to accept a bid from any other sorority for one calendar year. If you have any questions about this obligation, a panhellenic delegate can advise further before you sign your preference card.

Do I have attend all parties that I am invited to?

Yes. The object of Recruitment is to give you all the information that you need in order to make the best decision. Therefore, you must go to all the parties to which you are invited. If you choose to not attend one sorority's party then you will be dismissed from the Recruitment process and allowed to COB.

What should I talk about in a recruitment party?

It is important for you to be yourself during Recruitment and let the conversation flow naturally. Common topics are academics, study abroad, your personal interests or hobbies, and future aspirations or career goals. But don't feel limited by these! These ideas are merely guidelines. Talk about whatever is of interest to you. Remember: it is as important for you to learn about the sorority as it is for the sorority to learn about you. Ask the sisters any questions you might have about their specific chapter (dues, their philanthropic activities, opportunities for leadership, etc.) or about Greek life in general.

I have heard certain stereotypes about various sororities-how do I handle this information?

There are always rumors about any important event, and Recruitment is no exception. If you hear any derogatory remarks about a sorority or any individual members, think twice about why that person is telling you these things. The only opinion that should matter to you is yours Each chapter of a national or international organization is different from campus to campus, and each chapter at TWU is different from year to year. Be sure not to let someone else's perceptions influence you, or you might not be satisfied with your choices during Recruitment-you may even find that they're not your choices after all. Remember that each chapter is made up of different women with different talents and qualities, and that the sum of these very different individuals makes up the character of the group. If you have questions, be sure to talk to your Panhellenic Delegates.
How do I decide which groups I prefer?
Each person will have a different experience in each group, depending on whom she meets and on her personal preferences and personality. The right sorority for you should be a place where you feel comfortable and welcome. Your intuition, experiences at each party, and personal desires and goals should guide you to the groups that are right for you.
What if I turn down a bid that I receive?

If you receive a bid and decide not to accept it, you will not be able to participate in Formal Recruitment for one calendar year, and you will not be able to participate in Continuous Open Bidding for that same amount of time. However, we urge you to think carefully before making a decision to turn down a bid; if you are disappointed at first by your bid, emotions tend to temporarily cloud your thinking and judgement. Please give yourself and the sorority a chance before rejecting a bid. Bid Day is often a confusing day, so don't let that one event make a lifetime decision for you.
Do fraternities and sororities haze?

It is against Texas State law as well as every sorority's national policy to haze any member of their organization. TWU Panhellenic organizations do not condone nor tolerate any form of hazing of their members.
Is alcohol a big part of Greek Life?

No, being in a sorority at TWU is not just about parties. TWU's fraternities and sororities have some of the most active students on campus. Every organization puts in countless hours of community service, and raises money for their national philanthropies as well as encourages involvement in a wide variety of campus organizations. They also have frequently organized brotherhood/sisterhood events for their members. Whether or not to consume alcohol is a decision made by any TWU individual, being in a fraternity or sorority has no bearing on the decision.
